Movie Thoughts
Batman Begins -- A-

Very good movie.  Christopher Nolan
(Memento, Following, Insomnia) is a witch
behind the camera.
I usually don't like Comic book to the screen
movies but this one is the goods.  Michael
Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman and
Liam Neeson are all on top of their game with
their limited screen time.  Would have given it
an A+ if it were not for Katie Holmes
sputtering through the entire flick.  It's been
a while since I have heard the crowd cheer
during the end credits but they did here and
not because it was over but because everyone
seemed to really like it (even my date, Kelsey)
The Longest Yard -- C

Adequate for what it is and what it does for its
intended audience.  Had some really funny
moments and I have to admit I like Adam
Sandler.  He has more range as an actor than
many give him credit for (see Punch Drunk
Love).  With today's movie prices where they
are though you may want to wait for the
dollar theater or the rental.  Kelsey liked it
also.
Layer Cake -- B+

Directed by Snatch and Lock Stock & Two
Smoking Barrels producer Matthew Vaughn.
A very well mad flick out of the UK.
Definitely worth catching at the Art House
theaters or on rental, especially if British
films appeal to you.  Top notch crime drama.
Sorry, Kelsey had to miss out on this R rater.
Star Wars, Revenge of the Sith -- D

George Lucas cannot direct actors (or in this
case poor excuses for actors Hayden
Christenson and Natalie Portman).  The
(so-called) love scenes are laughable as is
Yoda flying around like bothersome gnat.  If
Yoda is such the supreme being in the force
and Jedi master why does he speak in 3 word
broken english phrases (why do any of them
speak english for that matter in a galaxy far
far away).  Ewan McGregor does his best to
hold it together but inevitably it just comes
down to one big pile of blah.  Does anyone else
have a problem with the fact that the bad ass
of our collective childhoods in the late 70s and
early 80s Darth Vader looks like a Backstreet
Boy under the helmet.  Lucas, great writer
and CGI innovator but horribly bad director.
Watch Batman Begins to see how
fantasy/sci-fi can can work on the big screen
in the hands of a competent director.  Kelsey
was pretty indifferent during this one as she
doesn't know the real saga from the original
three movies.
The Secretary -- B-

Semi-dark satirical comedy with great
performances by Maggie Gyllenhaal and
James Spader.  Could have moved a little
faster, but all in all worth a rental if you need
something to watch (not with the kids though).
Shaun of the Dead -- B+

One of the years best.  If you like drop dead
funny flicks with gratuitous violence and
zombies this is for you.  Rent it today
